5 Signs it is Time to Replace Your Water Heater

Hot water is a necessity for most of us, especially in the chilly winter months. Unfortunately, even the best hot water heaters don’t last forever. You don’t want to wait until it’s too late to replace your water heater; no hot water in the winter can be especially miserable in Northern VA where we experience random freezes and snow storms.

Here are five signs that it is time to invest in a new water heater.

1 – No Hot Water

Water supply is a key indicator of a hot water heater on the fritz. You may notice the water is colder or a complete lack of hot water. If you do have hot water, it may run out much quicker than normal. Both are signs that a part has failed or the hot water heater is past its prime and on its way to completely breaking.

At Marines Plumbing we will assess if the hot water heater needs a new part or a full replacement. If it’s just a heating element, we can quickly repair it and get your hot water back immediately.

2 – Water Quality

If you ever start to see water that is cloudy or appears rusty, there is tank corrosion in your water heater. While corrosion is not unusual in water heaters, typically it doesn’t affect the entire unit because of the anode rod. As the anode rod rusts, it gets used up.

If the anode rod is not replaced before it is fully used up, the rust will affect the entire unit and you start to see rusty water. If the entire unit is affected, it will need to be replaced.

3 – Extra Noises

Water heaters make a certain amount of noise when in use, but if you start hearing loud noises, especially a banging, you may need a new water heater. The harder your water heater has to work, the more the tank expands, and the more noise it makes. When there is an issue, the water heater works harder than usual.

4 – Water Leaks

When you see water around your water heater, it is time to call a professional. Water heaters can start to leak for a variety of reasons so it can be hard to determine the source yourself.

Call Marines Plumbing and we will find the source of the leak and determine if the existing unit can be fixed or if it needs to be replaced.

5 – Water Heater Age

Finally, just like with any household appliance, water heaters develop issues as they age. They are subject to parts breaking or wearing out, corrosion, and even cracked tanks. If your water heater is close to 10 years old, it is time to upgrade to a new model.

As the winter months are approaching, it is smart to schedule a proactive appointment to check on the health of your water heater. Call Marines Plumbing today to set up a consultation, especially if you have noticed any of the signs above.
