When Should I Winterize My Pipes

While it has not really felt like fall very much in Northern VA, we know those cooler temperatures are on their way. September was a dreary month, full of lots of rain and October may bring more of the same, hopefully with more fall like temperatures (where are those 65 degree days?).

As we get closer to the winter months and cold temperatures and snow, it is important to start thinking about winterizing your home.

Winterizing your home is vital for preparing all your features and rooms for the change in temperatures. If your exterior isn’t properly sealed, you could experience heat loss during the midst of a snow storm as heat escapes via cracks in your home. If your pipes aren’t properly insulated, they could freeze causing leaks and a lack of water within your home. If you hot water heater hasn’t been serviced in a while, you may lose hot water on a day when all you want to do is soak in a hot bath.

Frozen pipes are the worst. The last thing you want to be dealing with is a lack of water due to frozen pipes. Preparing for the harsh low temperatures is easy to do with one of the Marines Plumbing professionals.

At Marine’s Plumbing, we encourage our customers to initiate the house winterizing process earlier rather than later. Pipes are susceptible to freezing when it is below 32 degrees. Ideally, you call us well before the first time it drops below that threshold.

The Farmer’s Almanac is forecasting a very cold winter this year. Virginia is officially in the “chilly, wintry mix” zone. While they are also forecasting more than normal amounts of snow, Virginia may or may not fall within the zone predicting lots of precipitation.

Regardless, it sounds like we are in for a cold winter with potentially lots of snow. So, before Northern VA is blessed with a white Christmas, and a white January, and a white February, call Marines Plumbing for a home winterization consult. Be proactive and don’t wait until your pipes actually freeze.
