As plumbers, we see the same types of plumbing problems again and again. It’s the nature of the job and it’s what allows us to make a living, but if we can save you some money, we’re happy to help you make a necessary repair yourself. Here are some of the most common plumbing issues homeowners face, along with how to fix them.
Running Toilet
When it comes to bathroom plumbing issues, this one probably tops the list. If your toilet keeps going (and going and going…) after you flush, it’s very likely that you can fix it on your own quite easily after watching a few quick video tutorials online. Odds are, you need to either replace the toilet fill valve, flush valve, or flapper. Take off the top of the toilet tank and watch what happens when you flush to diagnose the problem.
Slow Draining Sink, Tub, or Shower
Does your sink take forever to drain? Do you end up standing in several inches of water when you take a shower? It sounds like your drains are clogged! This is another common plumbing issue. You can potentially save hundreds of dollars by learning how to snake your drains yourself. Often, clogs aren’t very far down a pipe, which means you can take care of it on your own easily—in fact, with a tub or shower, you might be able to open up the drain and use pliers to remove a hair clog. For a clog that’s further down a pipe, you may need a longer snake and professional assistance.
Low Water Pressure
Sometimes, you’re blessed with a house that always seems to have low water pressure—get in touch with us and we can fix that for you. If, on the other hand, your water pressure seems to have dropped in a single faucet, it’s likely because mineral deposits have built up in the aerator. Remove it, use a scale-removing cleaner to clear away the buildup, and then put it back to see if that helps.
Dripping Faucets
That constant drip-drip-drip of a leaky faucet can be enough to keep you up at night! Often the cause is a worn out washer or O-ring—if you’re handy, you should be able to replace these yourself and stop the leaking. If this doesn’t help or if you’re not comfortable making the fix yourself, our team of expert plumbers can help.
Leaking Hose Bibb
Another common plumbing issue is a leaking hose bibb on the outside of your house. These can be especially problematic because you might not notice that they’re leaking until you see an increase on your water bill—or, even worse, the leaking causes damage to the inside of your home. Switch out your leaking hose bibbs and be sure to replace them with a frost-proof variety, which is better able to withstand the weather changes we have here in Northern Virginia.
