It is that time of year once again – winter has arrived in Northern Virginia! With the arrival of dreaded winter weather, Marines Plumbing is once again in the season of fixing frozen pipes.

This year, in addition to preparing for winter (link to other blog here), be on the lookout for these telltale signs of potential frozen pipes in your home.

1 – No Water

The first sign of a frozen pipe is no water. If you turn on the faucet and nothing comes out, this is a huge warning sign. If water comes out but it is slow or trickling, this is another indicator that you have a pipe issue.

If you experience no water at any point this winter, do not delay in calling Marines Plumbing. This is indicative of a serious plumbing issue.

2 – Wet Walls

Something we hope you never experience is wet walls. If you feel any moisture on your walls or worse yet see bubbles on the wall, there is something very wrong going on. Be on the lookout for water anywhere that it shouldn’t be as this is another sign.

3 – Weird Sounds

When using bathroom fixtures, pay attention to the sounds you can hear. Ideally, you won’t hear anything out of the ordinary, but if you have frozen or broken pipes, you might hear the following:

  • Bubbling
  • Whistling
  • Banging
  • Clanking

Any of these sounds indicate there is an issue in the plumbing, and you should call Marines Plumbing right away.

4 – Unusual Smell

What’s worse than a frozen or broken pipe? A broken pipe that has caused a sewage backup that then seeps into your home. If your toilets, sinks, or drains suddenly expel a strong odor, you may have a broken pipe.

Don’t live with an overly stinky bathroom, call Marines Plumbing to come check out the pipes.

5 – Visibly Iced Pipes

A fairly obvious sign is exposed pipes that appear wet or frozen. Continually check pipes that you can see for signs of condensation or frost. If you see either, be very careful before turning on the faucet.

If you see any of these signs, call Marines Plumbing immediately. We will make sure that you are not stuck in a sticky situation this winter.
