September has turned into the month of rain! The very first weekend, we had a crazy storm on Saturday. Then the next week it rained every single day. After that it was Florence, causing evacuations all along the east coast.
You’d think with all this rain; the grass and trees would be really happy. Well, there is such a thing as too much water. Too much rain can cause issues for everything, including your plumbing features.
At Marines Plumbing, we routinely see the following three things after a heavy rainfall.
1- Sump Pump Flooding
Perhaps the most obvious issue is your sump pump flooding. With all the rain we’ve gotten, it is likely that an older sump pump would overflow or stop working. When that happens, it causes a flood in your basement. Make sure you check your basement and your sump pump for any water damage or evidence of water damage. If your sump pump didn’t turn on at all, it may be time for a new one.
2- Clogged Drains
One of the most common issues home owners encounter when there is an increased amount of rain is clogged drains. With all the extra precipitation, drains that otherwise were working fine, are more susceptible to clogging, especially if there was any sort of debris in them. If you see water coming up from your sink or shower drain, any sort of pooling water, or can hear gurgling sounds these are sure signs you have a clogged drain. Call us right away to prevent the issue from getting worse!
3- Broken Pipes
Adding to the other potential issues that heavy rain fall can cause, is broken pipes. Heavy rainfall can lead to a shift in the ground, which puts pressure on underground pipes. Older pipes in particular will be susceptible to breakage. Pay attention to the water that comes out of your faucet; if it is discolored or contains debris, you likely have a broken pipe.
With all of the rain that the Northern VA area has gotten the last month, make sure to check on your basement and pipes. If you need assistance, Marines Plumbing is here to help. Give us a call today to come inspect your plumbing features.
